I went to visit the National Portrait Gallery on the weekend with my husband and a few friends and we were privileged to view the Ralph Heimans portrait of the Queen in Westminster Abbey. I found the portrait so engaging, so easy to access emotionally that I had tears brimming in my eyes, ready to fall onto the polished marble floor. Perhaps I didn’t cry because I was afraid of the echo, that it would disrupt the complete stillness that surrounded me. I don’t know why but this portrait moved me, it was so beautiful. It is amazing when a piece of art can do that. Its frustrating when people ask me what the point of art is. They ask me why I should even bother with studying it. And its moments like this that provide an answer. Art transcends logic thought and functionality. It speaks to the spiritual and emotional part of our beings, it connects us with human
