Photography: From the Greek roots φωτός (phōtos), genitive of φῶς (phōs), “light” and γραφή (graphé) “representation by means of lines” or “drawing”, together meaning “drawing with light”.
Over the last few years my work has been focussed on double exposure. Playing with overlapping scenes, bodies and landscapes intersecting, faces merging in and out of swirling clouds of ink. Blurring the lines between the two competing scenes pulled from reality and merging them together to express something in-between the two.
I have loved this process. I have learned more and more about light and shadow, and have embraced the serendipitous (my favourite word) method (contradiction in terms).
Now it is time to return to the unknown, or the somewhat known but still novel.
So 2018/2019 is going to be a year of play. Working with alternative photographic processes my goal is to discover new means of expression, new ways of playing with light through chemistry, hacking hardware, and digging out old processes that aren’t widely used anymore.
I got thinking about this project after my last show which involved a group of photo-artists coming together to produce works of photography that sat outside the idea of the traditional photograph.
Over the next year I am going to investigate, play, experiment and generally rediscover the wonders of drawing with light – at it’s core photography, in all its forms.
Stay tuned for my updates every so often, I’m looking forward to the unknown.
